Google +1 Drags Website Performance

June 7, 2011 by at 9:31 am 2 Comments

You’ve worked hard: You post original content, you research your topics, you interact with your visitors in comments and on twitter, and you take part in discussions across the web. You are an expert in your field.

Google still hates you.

Website performance is one of two hundred factors used by Google to determine a site’s search results ranking. Poor performance can lead to a poor ranking. Poor performance can also lead to visitor frustration – and loss of interest in your topic.

Yet – untested – you rushed – yes YOU – rushed to load up the Google +1 button and didn’t think about the consequences.

Take a look at the performance hit this site took by loading the button that no one pushes – and I sure as hell can’t because Google really hates me – (not really – they don’t know me):

Website Performance

This graph shows there are several major places of concern but the largest concern is the Google +1 js and css.

Disclosure: WP Super Cache was disabled before taking this test. I didn’t want problems to be masked.

Conclusion

Ask yourself – is that Google +1 button really necessary?
